Chaoyin did not leave the island at once.
She stayed to repair the sea charts, marking every broken route with pale gold. The old man taught her to read the weight of wind: guilt flew low, longing was warm, and a true farewell was so light it could almost not be felt.
When winter came, he placed the copper key in her hand.
"The lighthouse needs no master," he said. "Only someone willing to light the lamp when the wind is late."
