Counting Only Two

Next morning, Tao counted. “One, two...” She walked around and tried again. The brown-faced sheep was eating. The black-faced sheep stood by a post. The blue-scarfed lamb was missing.

Ahe put down his empty basket and searched behind the cottage and beneath the tree. Nothing. The board still leaned, its rope hanging loose. Yesterday's “little gap” suddenly looked much bigger.

“Where could it have gone?” he asked anxiously. Tao crouched beside a trail of tiny hoofprints in the damp earth. “Let's see where these lead.” She pointed toward the meadow.
